Causes of Ankylosing Spondylitis

What are the Causes of Ankylosing Spondylitis? Why ankylosing spondylitis leads to spinal stiffening? Well, these two questions are the ones which I believe have made room in all your heads and happen to make you itch it at least once in a while.

Well, it hurts me to say that the scientists and researchers are yet to land to the real reason of ankylosing spondylitis. Therefore, we still don’t have the answer of the “WHAT” here.

However, there is a genetic link which every patient of AS happens to exhibit. Most of the patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis have a gene called HLA-B27 in them.

But it couldn’t be said that HLA-B27 is the primary cause behind AS, as around 10% of people with this gene haven’t had a hint of any of the symptoms a patient of AS has to suffer. Therefore, this dark mystery is yet to come out.

After having a session of discussion of the “WHAT” part of this article, let us peep into the “WHY” in this question.

Main Causes Of Ankylosing Spondylitis

When AS strikes for the first time, an inflammation in the bones (also known as osteitis) starts taking place around the edges of the joints. In these sites, specialized cells called inflammatory cells start multiplying in number. Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis

These cells secrete chemicals, which starts dissolving the bones of those areas. As a protective measure, the body initiates a repairing session with the help of scar tissue and new bone tissue.

But it doesn’t end up being helpful the bone in any way. It makes these bone weaker and weaker, day by day. Ultimately, when the inflammation burns off, our body starts repairing the damaged sites with a layer of calcium over it.

While this settlement is going on, a layer gets formed in between the ligaments and discs, ending up joining of these spaces leaving behind joint vertebrae. That is why the stiffness in the spine, inflammation in eyes occurs.

Even after being a red hot topic, ankylosing spondylitis is still under a pile of questions which are nothing less than a mystery for now. With the investigations going on now, we can say, that someday, we will have answers to all our questions.

Well, that is all for today. I just hope that this article was of some help to all my readers out there. There is more to come. So stay tuned for more such articles. Till then, see you soon. Cheers!!
